Mail carriers are often the one constant many of us have in our life no matter what.
While the USPS doesn’t have an official motto, the words, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” have come to represent couriers’ dedication.
And Kyle West, an Ohio mailman, certainly lives up to that motto and then some.
The 23-year-old who is known as Mailman Kyle makes several hundred deliveries every day. And of those, he knows each person by name.
“They’re my people. That’s my route,” Kyle told ABC News.
So, when he came across one of his elderly customers who didn’t have enough money to buy toilet paper at Walmart, he decided there was something more he could do for them all besides just deliver their mail.
Kyle wrote a letter and delivered one to each of his customers and let them know if there was anything they needed to let him know and he would try his best to help them out.
“If you are at risk and need help getting essential items let me know. I will do what I can to help.”
Many of Kyle’s customers are elderly and considered high risk in terms of the coronavirus. Many also do not have the means to purchase essentials in bulk.
Kyle said he received responses back from nearly everyone, though most were to say thanks for his kind offer. However, there were dozens of people who asked for his help, and others who offered to help neighbors in need.
“I’m doing this because I feel like I’m part of their neighborhood,” he said. “I spend more hours at the post office than I do at my own house.”
With stricter rules in place, Kyle is unable to continue his daily talks with some of his customers, but he’s still able to get them their essentials.
“It’s hard for us as well not being able to talk to our customers because that’s one of the big parts of our day, being able to see all of our favorite people,” he said.
He hopes that other mail carriers will be inspired and consider helping out the people who live in the neighborhoods that they serve.
I hope so too. This is a great idea, especially for those who may not be able to get out of their house or for those who cannot risk leaving their house.
