As the school year begins to wind down and students are still distance learning, high school seniors are coming to the realization that they may never be able to walk across the stage and receive their diploma like the classes who came before them.
But the class of 2020 is not graduating without recognition.
A high school in Florida lined their driveway with large portraits of their graduating seniors and recently, a principal in Texas spent nearly two weeks visiting every single senior at his high school.
With the end of the school year near, Virdie Montgomery, principal of Wylie High School in Wylie, Texas, wanted a way to make the seniors at his high school feel special.
“We’re a school of great tradition,” he said according to local reports.
So, he and his wife got in their car and began a 12-day trip to visit every single one of his 612 graduating seniors at their homes.
When all was said and done, the high school principal traveled more than 800 miles and visited 636 addresses.
“I tell you what, that first day, at the end of the first day it felt like I had made a mistake. Because it was hard,” he said.
While it may have been a tiring journey for Montgomery, his students welcomed the visit, even if it included a dad joke.
“I’m a sucker for puns and stuff and that was perfect, that was right up my alley,” Savannah Skinner, a senior at Wylie High School said.
“I’m not always in the best mood because it’s been a while since I’ve seen anybody. So, it just brought a smile to my face and it made me really happy.”
Parents of students praised Montgomery for going the extra mile and thanked him for his dedication to their children.
Although a graduation ceremony is still up in the air, Montgomery hopes the seniors will be able to have some sort of celebration. Either way, he commends them on their hard work and all that they’ve been able to accomplish, especially during the last few months of their high school career.
“And I’m so, so, so, so very proud of them the way they’ve handled everything.”
