According to AAA, as of July 6, 2022 the average price of gas is $4.77. One year ago the average price was $3.13.
It’s no secret that the cost of everyday living is at an all-time high, and many Americans are finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet. That’s why a gas station in Hinesville, Georgia decided to give its customers some relief at the pump this July 4th.
Ravi Patel, the owner of a Chevron station in Hinesville, said the idea came to him when he was sleeping and he immediately told his brother about helping their community.
“I was sleeping one time, woke up I was like ‘man, I need to do something to give back to the community and I was like what can I do to ease the burden on everyone’s wallet’ and the first thing that came to my head is gas,” he said.
The brothers decided to lower the price of gas at their station to a number not seen by customers for nearly two years.
“We just want to give back to the community, just because the community makes us what we are here as a family, we all came from India to make a better life for ourselves and this is what we need to do to give back to the community.”
Patel estimated they would fill about 5,000 gallons of gas, and even though his business would suffer a great loss – it costs him $3.85 per gallon, so he’d lose $1.86 per gallon – he wanted to help out his community.
Victoria Smith, one of Patel’s customers, was extremely grateful for the lower price.
“This is powerful … it’s deeper than just getting around, people aren’t seeing their family, people are having hard times.”
Usually it costs about $90 for Smith to fill up, but this day it was about half the price.
This was such a kind gesture. Everyone is struggling now so it’s not easy for anyone, even the gas station owners.
