There’s no denying the coronavirus pandemic has changed our lives in ways no one could have predicted. Classes are now being held online, employees are suddenly allowed to work from home, face coverings are required when you step inside a grocery store, and perhaps one of the saddest things is that funerals are now being livestreamed.
Recently, Lisa McDaniel was faced with a horrible reality. Her husband, John, of 31 years died due to complications from coronavirus. She planned to livestream his funeral, but after comments he reportedly made prior to contracting COVID-19, Lisa was forced to cancel the livestream “to protect my family and John’s legacy.”
In mid-March, when governors were beginning to implement stay-at-home orders, John reportedly made several posts on Facebook expressing his dissatisfaction.
The Facebook posts are no longer available, but the damage has been done, as many have taken his posts asking if coronavirus was a “political ploy” and used it against him.
In a statement published on Snyder Funeral Home’s Facebook page, Lisa expressed her family’s overwhelming grief, an emotion that many around the world are also experiencing.
She also added that many of the negative things said about her husband following his death, will never be able to be erased from her family’s hearts or minds.
“Many, like John, made statements early on not fully aware of the severity of COVID-19; many have retracted their statements knowing now the effects of this pandemic,” Lisa wrote.
“We know if John was still here with us he would acknowledge the national crisis we are in, abide by the stay-at-home order, and encourage family and friends to do the same,” she said. “But sadly he is not with us and we will forever have to live and cope with how his life ended far too soon.”
John’s obituary stated that he died “with his loving family by his side from complications from Covid-19.”
It is absolutely horrible to think that people would have anything negative to say about someone who died from coronavirus. Imagine if that person was your loved one.
John’s life is yet another life lost from the coronavirus and we should not be using his or anyone else’s death to bring each other down. We should be lifting each other up and supporting each other.
