While most of us across the nation were trying our best to stay inside and warm amid the frigid temperatures, one 10-year-old braved the snow to help dozens of hospital workers make it home safely.
Christian Stone wanted to do something to thank the hospital workers for their hard work during the pandemic so showed up to his local hospital in Rhode Island to sweep snow off their cars.
Joined by family friend Abbey Meeker they cleared the windscreens of those workers at Westerly Hospital.
“We kind of made it a game,” Abbey told CNN. When they heard the sound of workers unlocking their cars in the parking lot the helpful two would rush over to clean the snow off their cars as quickly as possible.
Christian had already been hard at work in his neighborhood shoveling neighbors’ drives for free before he and Abbey went to help local healthcare workers.
“I was thinking they’ve been helping us a lot through this whole pandemic, and I figured why don’t we help them, you know?” Christian told CNN affiliate WJAR.
“All day, every day the nurses here, they deal with the pandemic like COVID and they want to get home from work, so we thought we would make it a tiny bit easier for them by cleaning off their cars for them.”
One hospital worker said in a comment on the WJAR Facebook page that she wondered why her car was so clean when she left work on Tuesday morning.
“Only thing I had to do was [get] in and drive away!” she wrote, adding that it took her three hours to drive home because of the weather.
Abbey said they ended up cleaning off about 80 cars in four different employee parking lots.
“It’s been cold but extremely fun seeing how happy they get,” Christian said of the workers they had helped. “Some of them say, ‘Thank you so much’ and I’m just really happy to see them happy.”
What an inspiration these two are and a great idea of Christian’s! I hope they are properly recognized for helping our selfless frontline workers get home safely in such dangerous weather conditions.
