A third grader was recently recognized for the heroic actions he took in his school’s lunchroom.
Garrett Brown noticed one of his classmates choking on a chicken nugget and within seconds, the eight-year-old boy jumped into action.
The boy’s parents said “there are not enough words” to thank Garrett for saving their child’s life.
It was chicken nugget day at Lakeview Elementary School in Norman, Oklahoma when Cashton York began choking on his lunch.
Garrett spotted his fellow third grade classmate in trouble and immediately jumped into action.
He administered the Heimlich maneuver and saved Cashton’s life.
The young boy told WRAL he learned the life-saving technique after his father taught it to him following his own scary choking incident.
“He taught me how to do it in case anybody else is [choking],” Garrett said.
While what music teacher Jordan Nguyen described as “a teacher’s and parent’s worst nightmare” occurred in September, Garrett was recently recognized for his brave actions.
The Norman Fire Department and Norman Police Department honored the third grader “for jumping into action to save the life of another student” during a special assembly.
Cashton’s mother was extremely grateful Garrett was nearby to help her little boy.
“That was extremely scary, to know that in a matter of seconds my child could have choked to death on food at school, when you’re not around.”
The school announced they are planning to offer “basic, kid-friendly” first aid classes.
“That way, if they are out somewhere or if they’re home alone, or if they’re home with their siblings and something does happen, they’ll know what to do,” Nguyen said.
I totally agree with how this school is handling the situation. I believe all schools should offer a basic first aid class to students.
