It was a humble appeal for a special lady turning 106. Staff at a retirement home appealed to the public to send one of their residents 106 cards to mark the occasion.
The appeal from staff at Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community, in Virginia, went viral and resident Venus Tucker celebrated her birthday with more than 2,000 cards from well-wishers.
Venus described the generous offering as “a blessing from the Lord.”
The appeal for 106 cards was put out on August, 3 and within a few days the retirement home had received double that amount so staff reset their goal to 1,006.
It wasn’t long before news organizations from across the nation were sharing the appeal and two days before Venus’ birthday staff said 1,300 cards from across the nation had arrived plus flowers, as reported by The Roanoke Times.
Venus, who has lived at the retirement home for three years, was also surprised by a meal of her favorite things: fried chicken and Dr Pepper.
On the eve of her birthday the home had received more than 2,000 cards proving just how loved this special lady is.
Venus said she was grateful to have had such a beautiful, long life.
“I’m just thankful. I feel proud, but I don’t feel uppity. I am grateful for all of what people have done for me,” she said.
Venus, who loves to read, enjoyed a small celebration with staff and residents and a cake; the opening of her cards took up most of the party.
Community Administrator Jackie Holton said by the time Venus finishes reading all her cards she’ll be 107, as reported by the Epoch Times.
Happy Birthday Venus! You deserve every one of these cards to celebrate your special day.
Please share to wish Venus a very happy 106th birthday.
