Tom Hanks has had an illustrious career, yet of the more than 80 films he’s starred in he thinks only four are “pretty good.”
Pretty good?!
The 66-year-old actor has won numerous awards for his work as well as been honored with multiple highly regarded awards for his outstanding contributions to the entertainment world.
And yet he believes four are worthy of being called pretty good.
In a recent interview with People, Hanks discussed his upcoming novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, and the process of filmmaking and how it still amazes him to this day.
“No one knows how a movie is made — though everyone thinks they do,” he said.
“I’ve made a ton of movies (and four of them are pretty good, I think) and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracle.”
He called the process “very hard work over a very long period of time that consists of so many moments of joy slapped up against an equal number of feelings of self-loathing.”
“It is the greatest job in the world and the most confounding of labors that I know of.”
Unfortunately, Hanks left us questioning which of his films he considered pretty good.
Vulture seems to think they figured out the actor’s list, though no confirmation yet.
And last year during an episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Hanks was asked to rate his favorite films.
Forrest Gump was excluded from the list.
While listing the films he most enjoyed making – note not necessarily his favorite ones – Hanks commented that Forrest Gump was much more than the “sappy nostalgiafest” it’s remembered for today.
To the list, Hanks added A League of Their Own, which he enjoyed because he got to play baseball all summer; Cast Away because he was surrounded by beauty; and Cloud Atlas because it was shot “on a hope and a dream and nothing but a circle of love … That whole movie was such a deep throw that making it was magical.”
So what films does Hanks consider “pretty good,” it’s really anyone’s guess. Personally, I think all of his films are more than pretty good.
If you had to choose Tom Hanks’ top four films what would they be?
