Earlier this month, “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update co-host, Michael Che announced his grandmother died from COVID-19.
“I’m doing OK, considering. I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone,” he wrote in a now deleted Instagram post.
Now, to honor her memory Che announced he will be paying one month’s rent for all 160 units in the building where his grandmother lived, but he hopes that others will step in an help those who need help the most.
Che’s grandmother is one of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who live in a building run by the New York City Housing Authority.
Che joins a growing list of celebrities who are using their star power to help those who are struggling in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. Leonardo DiCaprio set up a $15 million fund to help feed Americans and Oprah donated $10 million to relief efforts.
The comedian recognizes that paying for one month’s rent is “just a drop in the bucket,” but it will give families once less thing to worry about for at least one month.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Michael. This is a great way to honor your grandmother. I only hope that others will step up and do what is right.
