Chip and Joanna Gaines are back on cable TV, and to celebrate they’ve shared their original casting tape from Fixer Upper.
Because who doesn’t love a good throwback, right?
On Wednesday, January 5 at 9pm, the highly-anticipated Magnolia Network will debut on cable television. The network, which was formerly the DIY Network, will finally premiere after many delays due to the pandemic.
The never-before-seen video shows off the couple’s fun-loving personalities we have all come to love over the past decade.
It begins with the two introducing themselves and their work, and it ends with Chip sitting on a toilet to be used for a renovation with a pensive look on his face.
“How could you not want to watch this show?” he asks the camera.
The couple filmed a pilot episode for HGTV, and the episode aired in May 2013.
After their pilot aired, the couple anxiously awaited to hear if their show would be picked up. While they are a huge success now, in 2013, they had no idea what their future might hold.
“Maybe there is some stuff going on behind the scenes, but we would be excited to know what’s going on,” Joanna told the Waco Tribune-Herald in 2013. “But you know what they say: ‘No news is good news.’”
Following the airing of their pilot episode, the Gaineses received feedback from around the country – surely a good sign.
“The volume of messages online and by phone has been so great that I’ve had to hire an assistant to help with responses. We don’t want anyone to think we’re ignoring them.”
It didn’t take long for the relatively unknown contractor and decorator, though they had renovated at least 100 homes prior to Fixer Upper, to impress the powers that be. Their show was given the green light.
“I think it is their perfect imperfections,” Allison Page, the general manager at both the HGTV and DIY networks told Texas Monthly in 2016.
They have the kind of marriage and family you’d want. It’s not perfect. He does silly things, and they occasionally trip over their words or sweat on each other. They are the best of what’s real in life. It’s not a kind of fantasy—perfected, glossy, everything works every second. There’s an authenticity in their relationship and that comes through in the show.
After five wildly successful seasons, Fixer Upper ended its run. Although the Gaineses were not ready to retire. They spent time off-air celebrating their love for one another, raising nearly $500,000 for charity, and working on their new network.
For those who missed out on the streaming premiere of the couple’s reboot of their popular HGTV series, Fixer Upper: Welcome Home will air January 5 on the new Magnolia Network.
