While Amal and George Clooney may be considered a high profile couple, the two lead a rather private life when it comes to their relationship and family.
Recently, Amal spoke with Time for their 2022 Women of the Year issue and discussed her marriage to George.
“Marriage has been wonderful,” she told the publication.
Amal, 44, is a practicing international criminal law and human rights lawyer. She has fought for countless people all over the world.
“When I choose a case, I think carefully about the ripple effect,” she said. “So I do think about which cases are going to have the greatest impact—not only for that individual but for others who are vulnerable as well.”
The mother of twins, Alexander and Ella, said also said she wants her children to know she’s changing the world.
“With everything going on today, I want to have a good answer when they ask me what I was doing.”
First meeting
George and Amal first met in July 2013. A mutual friend introduced the two of them.
“It was the wildest thing, a mutual friend of ours said, ‘I’m stopping by and can I bring a friend?’ And I was like, ‘Of course.’ And I got a call from my agent who called me and said, ‘I met this woman who’s coming to your house who you’re going to marry,'” George told Harper’s Bazaar.
The two exchanged email addresses because Amal said she would send George some photos of his parents – George’s parents were also home at the time – and suddenly the two began writing each other.
“I didn’t know if she wanted to go out with me, I just thought we were buddies,” he said.
Eventually it was clear they were more than just friends and less than a year later the couple was engaged.
They got married in September 2014. Three years later the couple welcomed twins Alexander and Ella.
“I have in my husband a partner who is incredibly inspirational and supportive, and we have a home filled with love and laughter. It is a joy beyond anything I could ever have imagined. I feel so lucky to have found a great love in my life, and to be a mother.”
She uses the love and support she receives from her husband and children to fuel her fight for justice.
The couple founded The Clooney Foundation which “advocates for justice through accountability for human rights abuses around the world.”
“We try to do that by holding those who are responsible to account. So the methodology is to expose, but also to punish and remedy. And it is a result of both my experience and the many years George has also spent working on these issues,” Amal told Time.
Although Amal has an excellent track record, sometimes the media looks past it and focuses on her style or the fact that she’s married to George Clooney.
She tries to ignore it.
“Since I can’t control it, my approach is just not to dwell on it and just get on with my work and my life and hope that attitudes will catch up. And I do actually feel like there is a female solidarity that has built up on these issues where other women will sort of call that out in a way that maybe wouldn’t have happened five or 10 years ago. So attitudes are changing.”
Amal is an inspiration. Not only does she have a beautiful family, but she is working to help those who are being treated unfairly.
