When the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) discovered B.B. in a puppy mill, the toy poodle was in bad shape.
She barely weighed a couple pounds, she only had three teeth left, and her rescuers had no idea how old she was.
But B.B. was far from the only animal rescued that day. The HSUS team also found 104 other dogs, as well as 20 cats and three goats—all living under horrendous conditions.
Like the other dogs, B.B. lived in a filthy little cage in a dark basement that lacked such basic neccessities as ventilation.
But soon, the lovable poodle’s hell would be over.
“She was very tiny, and she looked like this helpless creature,” said Jessica Lauginiger, animal crimes manager at HSUS.
B.B. had probably never seen daylight and her contact with people had been basically non-existent.
“I put my hand up to the cage, and she’d come up and sniff a little bit. She was very hesitant for human attention, but she wanted it,” Jessica said.
Based on B.B.’s swollen breasts, the rescue team thinks B.B. was used for breeding and spent her entire life in a cage.
When she was brought outside, B.B. kept squinting, as if she’d never seen sunlight before.
The toy poodle had also never felt grass under her paws.
B.B. and most of the other animals were cared for at Cabarrus Animal Hospital, about 35 minutes north of the hellish puppy mill.
However, B.B. will to live made the strongest impression on the rescue team.
They chose her as the star of the Humane Society’s annual campaign to collect money to help abandoned animals and try to put an end to puppy mills.
After B.B. recovered a bit, she was estimated to be between seven and 10 years old. She’ll live the rest of her life in the loving care of her new owner.
B.B. was adopted by Brenda Tortoreo, who previously worked at the animal hospital where she received care.
B.B. can finally run freely in the grass and experience all the exciting things that can be found in nature.
Now, B.B. is living the life that all dogs deserve to live—a life of love and freedom!
