Police Kareem Garibaldi had worked 12-hour-shift in a row. But even though he was exhausted and tired, he refused to go home before he knew that the little street dog would be safe. Now, he is celebrated worldwide for his amazing effort.
It all started on a Saturday morning when Kareem from Lakeland Police Department in Florida saw a little puppy wandering around alone in a residential area. She had no collar on, and no owner was nearby. Kareem couldn’t just leave her there so he decided to take her to the station. When his shift was over, he took the puppy home with him.
The next day he went searching for the puppy’s owner, but nobody showed up looking for a dog. The little puppy seemed to be homeless, so Kareem had to take care of her for one more night.
The next morning Kareem took the puppy to SPCA Florida to have a veterinarian check her for any illnesses or injuries. But he was so tired after his long shifts so he fell asleep in the waiting room. Beside him, so did the puppy.

“I walked in, and that’s when I saw him and the puppy,” Connie Johnson from the SPCA to The Dodo. “He was exhausted, the puppy was exhausted, and they were sleeping. It was one of those moments that just grab your heart. He was so determined to get her help.”
Kareem waited for three hours while the vets examined the samples they took from the puppy. He was tired and slept in the waiting room – but never considered going home. Kareem was determined that the puppy get the help she needed.

Luckily, she had just a few ticks, and was otherwise healthy.
After the puppy had been examined, Kareem took her back to the police station. That’s when something really wonderful happened! One of his colleagues saw the puppy and fell in love with her. And that was it: the little puppy got its new home.
Thanks to Kareem’s good heart and determination, the puppy had a new chance in life. No one knows how she ended up alone on the street, but one thing is certain: She will never be abandoned again!
The pictures of Kareem in SPCA’S waiting room has now spread all over the internet and he has become an overnight celebrity. I understand why!
