Have you ever been going anywhere and seen something that you simply couldn’t ignore?
Something within you stirs; tells you to stop and take a closer look.
That’s exactly what happened to Malissa Sergent Lewis one day in August 2016.
She was rushing to get to work and decided to take a short cut in order to shave time off of her journey.
As she drove along a lonely forest road, she encountered a black bag lying close to the verge.
“I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving,” she told The Dodo.
“I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”
The closer she got, the more sure she was that something the bag was moving. She drove by slowly and took out her mobile phone to film what was happening.

The bag was tied with a tough knot, so Malissa tore the bag open to help the poor creature inside break free. She carefully peered into the hole she had made, and saw an animal desperately happy to see her.
Inside the bag was a little puppy, one that couldn’t stop wagging his tail upon sighting his rescuer.
The puppy had a collar, but no name tag. She knew she couldn’t simply leave him on the road, so she took the pup with her to the school where she worked.
“I just put him in my lap and drove to school,” she told The Dodo.
“I couldn’t just leave him in the car, so I brought him in with me. The principal saw me and said, ‘You have a dog!’ I said, ‘It’s a long story.'”
A little later on, she called her son to come and pick up the dog and take him home. The puppy, named Hefty, was taken to the vet for a checkup. He was in perfect health, and received all the necessary vaccinations.
To this day, what happened to the puppy that saw him left to die at the side of the road remains a mystery. He could have been dumped by his former owners, he could have been stolen. Malissa reported that she had found a missing dog, but no one answered her calls.
Perhaps that’s just as well! Malissa and her family decided to adopt Hefty – they knew he would be loved and cared for as part of their family; he would never again face the trauma of being left alone.
It’s completely incomprehensible that anyone could do such a thing to a pet. If you’ve ever owned a dog, you’ll know the sort of bond that is forged. Even if there is no other option but to get rid of it, you’d ensure it was given the best possible new home/shelter rather than simply abandoning it.

No matter how many plans we make, life never goes exactly how we think it will. If Malissa had not been late that day; if she hadn’t taken a shortcut to work, she would never have found Hefty by the side of the road.
