A lovely little story about an 8-year-old girl and her friendship with a bunch of adorable crows.
A lot of people enjoy feeding hungry birds. But has anyone ever got something back from their bird friends? Not me…
But a girl who actually got real close with a bunch of crows is 8-year-old Gabi Mann. The crows are so delighted with her company that they give her gifts on a daily basis.
The adorable friendship started out with a mistake. Gabi dropped a piece of chicken in the street that the crows ate. Gabi noticed their hunger for food and started to bring them food every day when she was going to school. And when she was heading back home at the end of the day. Gradually, the whole family started to engage in the crows. Two years ago, Gabi and her mother started a daily routine. They replace the water in the birdbath and hand out generous amounts of dog food and peanuts.
From that day, the crows started to respond to the generosity. After eaten their daily dose of peanuts, they always left something for Gabi. It could be an earring, a polished rock, a hinge or something like that. Some of the gifts are quite stunning. One day, they left a metal piece with the word “best” stamped on it. It’s not crazy to think that the crows are flying around with the other half that says “friend”…
John Marzluff, Professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington, has done plenty of studies of crows and states that people and crows can form meaningful bonds. But gifts is not granted… Though Marzluff knows about several cases where people are handed gifts from birds.
Gabi collects all of her gifts in a box featured with dates. Here you have pearls, Lego pieces, buttons and paper clips. The favorite? A pearl colored heart. “It’s showing me how much they love me”, Gabi says.
