Seeing whales up-close is a thrill for just about anyone. And it turns out, some whales are just as excited to make contact with us humans, as you’ll see below. This video, uploaded by One World One Ocean to YouTube in 2012, has racked up nearly 8 million views—and once you see it, you’ll understand why. While boating around Mexico’s San Ignacio Lagoon in 2012, some tourists were approached by a gray whale calf. Beyond excited, the tourists reached over the side to try and touch the whale. Then suddenly, the calf’s mother appeared and lifted her baby out of the water so the tourists could pet him. Amazing! It’s beautiful to see that the interest between humans and whales is mutual. And the fact that the mother whale encouraged her baby to make contact is a sign that the mother whale has been treated with respect. One World One Ocean says, “The gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon frequently approach small tourist boats, seeking the human interaction. While they could easily avoid the people, whose small boats are not allowed to closely approach whales, they actually seem to enjoy making contact.”
