Today’s world seems like a constant cycle of stress and bad news.
Turn on the TV and switch to a news channel, or pick up a newspaper at your local store, and you’re likely to find stories of catastrophes, crimes and impending disasters.
Wouldn’t it be nice to just read a story of pure joy for once? Of course it would! Which is why I’m delighted to say I have just that story. Obviously it involves dogs (what purely joyful story wouldn’t?) and focuses on the recent meet up of 361 Golden Retrievers to celebrate the breed’s 150th birthday…
You probably weren’t aware that a breed of dog could have a birthday – I certainly wasn’t – but that doesn’t make the occasion any less special. For the Golden Retriever, whose lineage is said to hark back to a breeding experiment by Lord Tweedmouth, it was time to head back to Tomich, Inverness-shire, Scotland, for one big old celebration.
In total, 361 Golden Retrievers attended the birthday bash, with the results being as brilliantly, cheerfully chaotic as one might expect.
Ashleigh Baird, who was there with her two Golden Retrievers, told British website LadBible: “It was a fantastic day, lovely to see all the Goldens playing and having fun together.
“We were so surprised that people had travelled from all over the world to be there, but that made it all the more special.”
The event itself took place at Guisachan House, which is marked as the ancestral home of the famous breed. The Golden Retriever line is documented to have come into being when, in 1868, Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks – later known as Lord Tweedmouth – bred a Wavy-Coated Retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel together.

We know, adorable right? It’s safe to say the video is being saved in my library so I can watch it whenever I feel down.
