Dave Coulier, star of Full House, recently announced he is two years sober. The 62-year-old actor explained his decision to cut alcohol out of his life in a lengthy Instagram post accompanied by a photo of him with a bloodied face.
“I was a drunk. Yes. An alcoholic. I’ve been alcohol free since January 1, 2020,” he wrote.
The comedian told Good Morning America that taking the first step and admitting he was an alcoholic was “hard” because it was not how he would describe himself.
“No one loved having ‘beers with the boys’ after playing hockey or a round of golf more than me. I was always the ‘final final’ guy in the room.”
But then he realized that his drinking was actually “very, very thinly disguised as ‘let’s have a great time.'”
And even then it wasn’t until Coulier suffered a physical injury that he knew he needed to change the course of his life.
“When I drank, I was the life of the party. I could make people laugh until they fell down. In this picture I was the one who fell down. Not because I was playing hockey or doing the things I love – like chopping wood or doing construction, golfing, fishing or flying airplanes. I was hammered and fell, going up some stairs made of stone.”
Coulier sent the photo to his wife of almost eight years, who was out of town at the time, and when she started crying he thought, “wow, I need to fix this.”
So he did, and on January 1, 2020 he began his sobriety journey.
“I decided to make a decision for my own well-being, my family and for those around me who I love so dearly,” he wrote.
The comedian explained that the “mental and physical withdrawal” were major challenges for him, but with the help of his wife and friends, he was able to make it to two years and beyond.
“The sky is more blue, my heart is no longer closed, and I enjoy making people laugh until they fall down more than ever before.”
Alongside countless comments from fans were messages from his former Full House and Fuller House co-stars congratulating him.
“Proud of you brother!” John Stamos wrote.
“Love you and always proud of you ❤️” Candace Cameron Bure commented.
“SO proud of you. I love you and your strength so much!! ❤️❤️” his wife Melissa wrote.
