He looks like a simple South American farmer. But the man behind this humble persona is actually quite extraordinary.
The man in the picture is José Mujica. He’s from Uruguay and lives on a small farm with his wife and a three-legged dog named Manuela.
José lives a modest but happy life. And it’s hard to believe what his old job was.
José used to work at Uruguay’s Parliament House. But he wasn’t a caretaker or a cleaner, if that’s what you were thinking.
José was the president of Uruguay from 2010 and 2015.
José Mujica was known as the “World’s Poorest President” because he donated 90 percent of his salary to entreprenuers and charities that benefit poor peopole in his country.
It wasn’t unusual for him to attend meetings dressed like this. He was more concerned about policy than his appearance.
José is accustomed to living a modest life. After he fought for his country’s freedom, he spent 14 years in prison while Uruguay was under military rule.
During his time as president, José wanted to be treated the same as everyone else. And he even drove his old Volkswagen Beetle to work.
I think many of today’s leaders would do well to take a look at José’s example. He was a leader of the people who was also one of the people. Nowadays, Mujica has retired from politics. He didn’t leave his post with pomp and circumstance. He only said a few simple words: “Thank you, people.”
