I love avocados to death and I know I’m definitely not alone. The fruit has gotten worldwide attention in recent years as a power food. I’ve even heard that if ever deserted on an island and you had nothing more to eat but avocados, you could still remain healthy for years! So yes, besides tasting amazing and being incredibly adaptable to all kinds of meals, there are certainly many more amazing reasons to eat this awesome fruit. Here are some of the things that actually happen should you consume avocados every day.
1. You can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular diseases account for an alarming number of fatalities for both men and women around the world. Seems reason enough to work hard toward protecting our precious hearts. Avocados have just the thing to help us do this, thanks to their magical qualities of low levels of saturated fats, and high levels of unsaturated fat. Eating too much saturated fat raises cholesterol while intake of unsaturated fats reduces it. Avocados also contain antioxidants such as carotenoids and phenolics that can help to prevent inflammation and oxidative stress, while improving blood circulation.
2. You can make it easier to maintain weight.
For those who struggle with weight, avocados can help lose weight and maintain a healthy BMI by promoting the feeling of satiety. It has also been shown that with avocado in any given meal, the likelihood of overeating is reduced. In addition, studies have shown that diets with monounsaturated fatty acids, which avocados are filled with are better for the heart than diets built on low fat intake.
3. You can reduce the risk of cancer.
Avocado contain several phytochemicals that can reduce the risk of cancer. Group proteins called glutathione and xanthophyll lutein, both of which are found in avocados, have shown a reduction in oral cancer. Moreover, additional research shows that avocados can reduce the risk of both breast and prostate cancer. Although more broad research is needed, several smaller scale studies have shown that specific types of fat coming from avocados can even have anti-cancer effects on myeloid leukaemia cells.
4. You protect your skin and eyes longer into old age.
As it turns out, avocados’ carotenoids do a lot for our bodies. Both lutein and other substances found in avocados called zeaxanthin may slow age-related visual impairment and prevent visual defects. The same nutrients also work against oxidative UV damage and keep the skin smooth and healthy. The simple absorption of carotenoids in avocados into our body in comparison with many other fruits and vegetables makes eating avocados every day a wise choice.
I absolutely adore avocado and now have more reasons than ever to continue making way too much guacamole, way too often. If you know someone who thinks they are eating too much avocado – or on the other hand never touch the lovely fruit, then make sure you share this – and problem solved!
