When I was younger, I worked for some years in the restaurant business and had the occasion of serving a variety of guests each night. More often than not, they were very nice and friendly with me, but now and then I met people who unfortunately just seemed to have left all their manners at home. They could really moan at absolutely everything and sometimes it went so far that they scolded me even though I did everything I could for them and gave the best service I possibly could. This story I discovered online really reminded me of those not-so-fun days. I can’t confirm whether this story happened exactly in this way in real life or not, but given what I’ve been through, it feels quite likely. Here’s a waitress who gets a real sermon from a rude, and just really mean-spirited guest. It’s a good thing his date would teach him the lesson of a lifetime before the night would be over.
(It’s a busy Saturday night. During the dinner rush, I’ve been dealing with a table of two 20-somethings that appear to be on a date. The guy has found something to complain about every time I’ve walked by, while his date just blushes and stays quiet. They’ve finished their meal.)
Man: “Are you new here?”
Me: “No, sir. I’ve been a waitress here for two years and three years at [other restaurant] prior.”
Man: “How can you be so slow and serve such bad food? Are you just really terrible at what you do?! The salad was wilty, and the entree was way too cold, and you were nowhere to be found. Plus, this place is far too noisy; I could barely hear myself speak! Honestly, I get better service at a fast food place.”
Me: “I’m sorry you feel that way. While there isn’t much I can do about the noise, I did offer to bring you different food before, but you said no.”
Man: *waves me off* “Just bring me the check, and try not to be so slow about it for once.”
(I go and get the check, but when I return, the girl stands up and hands me a $20 bill.)
Girl: “Here, this is your tip. He wasn’t going to give you one. As a former waitress myself, I thought you were doing a perfectly fine job. My food was great, and the service was fast even though you’re so busy right now.”
(She turns to her companion.)
Girl: “People like you made my job so much worse, especially for making us work that much harder for no tip. So thanks for the meal, but you can go ahead and delete my number because there will be no second date. And by the way, potjevleesch is supposed to be served cold, you idiot.”
(With that, she left the restaurant without her date. It made the whole night worth it, to see that rude guy suddenly speechless for once.)
