Guts, determination, and a lot of heart—that’s what it takes to make it in the military, where even training and testing can be more than most ordinary folks could withstand. In April 2015, U.S. Army Captain Sarah Cudd of Public Health Command, Fort Knox set out to earn the Expert Field Medical Badge. It’s an honor that less than 20 percent of soldiers who attempt it pass, making it one of the Army’s most difficult to obtain and most prestigious special skill badges. After completing set of grueling written and physical tests, Captain Cudd was a 12-mile march away from earning her badge. But it wouldn’t be easy—she’d be wearing 35 pounds of full combat gear and have to cross the finish line within three hours. If she didn’t, all her effort would be for naught. The video below starts near the end of that march. While most of her fellow soldiers have already fallen by the wayside, Cudd places one foot in front of the other and plods on, albeit shakily. Then, when Cudd is mere feet away from the finish line, her legs turn to jelly and she collapses. It’s heartbreaking to watch, but Cudd doesn’t give up easily. And it’s what she does next (with a little help from her fellow soldiers) that makes this video so inspiring and shows you what it means to be a true soldier. Incredible!
