The photo depicting a newborn resting on its mother’s legs has received over 200,000 likes and 60,000 shares in just a week- not to mention a whopping 12 million views.
The photo clearly depicts a mother’s scar from the c-section she underwent in order to save her baby boy. She carefully cradles her newborn son on her thighs, just below her belly and genital area.
Helen Aller, the UK-based photographer who took the picture, had photographed the pregnant woman before the delivery and the mother had told her that the prospects of requiring a c-section frightened her. She was later forced to face her fears and indeed underwent a Ceasarean-section operation in order to save her son.
“She asked me to come over this morning and shoot this particular image, as her worst nightmare proved to be what saved her and her son’s lives, Helen told the UK’s Daily Mail.

Reaction to the photograph has varied greatly, and led to an online debate on its appropriateness. While many hailed its uncensored display of a caesarean section, and shared their own experiences with the surgery, others have expressed distaste, calling the photo offensive, and even reporting it to Facebook.
Helen, however, has said that she is focusing on the overwhelming positive response and the fact that the photo has drawn attention to Caesarean section operations.
“People like the picture, but it’s more about those women who’ve had caesareans who can relate to each other. So many said they felt like they’d failed, but after looking at my picture they felt completely different,” she told the Daily Mail.
The mother in the image has chosen to remain anonymous, but according to Helen she is doing well and is busy taking care of her little baby.
Personally, I think the photo is extraordinary! The fact that you cannot see the mother’s face and that the scar is so vividly exposed allows viewers to focus on the miracle of childbirth.
