An elderly couple who were given slim odds when they both contracted COVID-19 at the same time have been discharged from hospital.
As per reports, Gillian England, 88, and her 91-year-old husband Michael, have been married for over 60 years, but both tested positive for coronavirus three weeks ago.
The pair were told they could go home from Leicester Royal Infirmary in Leicester, UK, having both withstood the disease’s trials and tribulations.
Nurses at the hospital told how Michael had a tendency to get up early so he could get dressed and go to see his wife before his therapist arrived. The couple would often enjoy a cup of tea together.
Gillian and Michael have since been deemed healthy enough to go home, where they’re continuing their recovery.
“I want to get better so I can look after my wife – first and foremost, I want to be there for Gillian,” Michael said.
“While I’ve been in hospital I’ve not really missed anything because Gillian is here and I have been able to see her every day.
“I am so grateful to all the staff who tried very hard to make sure we have been looked after on the same ward.
“Being discharged together, on the same day is even more special as we have been on our recovery journey together.
“The medical care is outstanding and I can’t describe the kindness of the nursing staff who made our stay in hospital so comfortable.
“They have shown such compassion to myself and Gillian in so many ways and we have felt that kindness. Kindness goes such a long way.”
I don’t know about you, but with everything that’s going on in the world right now, it’s nice to see little rays of positivity. Gillian and Michael getting to go home has made my day!
