17-Year-Old’s Feminist Yearbook Quote Is Going Viral. This Is Gold.

In the United States, it’s a tradition to have a yearbook with student photos that everyone receives at the end of the year. A lot of students also write a quote beneath their photo. This is one student that got the whole Internet fired up thanks to her important and wise quote.

To this yearbook photo, it is common to use a well-known quote or something from a song lyric. But our hero Caitlyn Cannon, 17, did something else. She didn’t want to be like everyone else, and, therefore, her decision was to quote something important and inspiring.

So she wrote this:

Caitlyn

“I need feminism because I intend on marrying rich and I can’t do that if my wife and I are making .75 cent for every dollar a man makes.”

Caitlyn, who describes herself as a “feminist” and “really gay” told Huffington Post that she found the quote on Tumblr and changed the parts that were written from a man’s perspective.

A friend was inspired and published a picture of the yearbook photo on Twitter. The tweet have been retweeted over 11 000 times.

Caitlyn said she wanted to leave something behind that was both different and true to herself.

She wrote this to Huffington Post: “I was tired of seeing the same old quotes from popular books and movies and authors, and I wanted to call attention to a problem that women face. I’ve never really been ashamed to say that I am gay, so the LGBT aspect was simply who I am.”

Of course, a lot of questioned the big salary gap and if it was correct. But according to the White House, an American women earns, on average, only 77% of what a man do the same work. The differences are even worse if you take look at ethnicity. An afro-American or latin American woman only earn 64% and 56% of what a white man earns.

I think it’s an amazing initiative from Caitlyn. Feel free to share if agree with me on that.
