It can’t be denied: teachers have a huge responsibility towards children, parents and, in many ways, society as a whole. That said, it can be a tricky profession as they try to balance discipline and severity in the classroom with compassion and understanding.
But sometimes, as this story demonstrates, things just go much, much too far.
A Los Angeles family is outraged after their son recently came home with an unbelievable story.
The 8-year-old Manhattan Place Elementary School student told his mother that he was forced to urinate into a trash can in his classroom — exposing himself right in front of all his classmates.
The boy soiled himself in the process and was later forced to cover himself in a plastic garbage bag.
“My child did not deserve this — no child deserves to be treated this way,” mother Sonia Mongol said in tears.
According to the mother, her son had repeatedly asked his teacher if he could use the boy’s room. His teacher refused again and again.
When the boy said he couldn’t wait any longer, the teacher gave him an unthinkable option: to pee into the classroom’s garbage can, located at the front of the class.
He soiled himself in the process, and was later given trash bags to cover up in.
“Why would you make a child expose himself in front of the classroom, and then put a garbage bag over him when he comes to you for help? Why would you treat a child that way?” mother Sonia said.
The boy’s parents were not alerted of the situation and he was forced to stay covered in trash bags for the remainder of the school day.
Retired teacher Latricia Mitchell is among those supporting the Mongol family. She explains that teachers do sometimes take a harsh approach when it comes to bathroom use simply because children tend to ask to use the toilet all the time simply to get out of the classroom.
But there comes a time when teachers need to use their better judgment.
“Sometimes we don’t allow the children to go to the bathroom because they go all the time,” she said. “But after they ask you twice, you should realize that something is going on.”
As a result of the incident, Sonia says he son is now the target of bullying from other children. She fears that the situation will cause him to suffer for a prolonged period of time.
The incident is being investigated by the school and local authorities.
This is just awful! Absolutely no child deserves to be treated this way — my heart really broke for this young boy!
