Let’s face it, getting old is no fun at all. Your body no longer works as it once did, friends who were once fast companions fade to memories and there can be a sense of sadness when you reflect that your best days might just be behind you.
For some, however, age isn’t such an obstacle. Certainly not for Luther Younger.
His wife of 55 years was diagnosed with a brain tumor almost nine years ago, but there’s nothing that will stop him from seeing her.
99-year-old Luther from Rochester, USA is real proof that true love never fades.
He and his wife Waverlee have been married for 55 years and every day he walks to visit her at the hospital.
He could get a ride or take the bus, but he prefers to walk the journey.
“I got a wife. I don’t want to wait on the bus. I want to go up there to see my wife,” he told CBS News.
It was just shy of nine years ago that Luther and his wife received a tragic message. Waverlee was diagnosed with a brain tumor and doctors didn’t think she’d live for more than five years. Today, however, she’s been fighting for almost nine years, and Luther is always standing in her corner.
A local celebrity
Luther himself has become something of a local celebrity, and there are many people who want him to stop for a chat.
The 99-year-old refuses, however. He thinks it’s better to simply keep going, and the walking helps him to keep his head clear.
The daily trek – which is a round trip of six miles – isn’t any show of strength, but rather proof of the undying connection he and his wife share.
“She is a beautiful lady and she treats me as a person is supposed to be … she made a man out of me,” he said to CBS.
“That’s why I love her, because she’s tough. She’s not weak … That’s the kind of woman I want.”
The couple’s daughter, Luthea, would prefer that her dad at least accept a ride home on exceptionally hot days, but Luther won’t hear any of it.
“He’s always cared about her the way he does [now]. He loves my mom, He’ll do anything for her,” she said.
