It’s amazing what you can do when you use your time wisely.
Chi Krneta of Seattle didn’t spend her 50-minute morning bus commute thumbing through Facebook, texting friends, or playing Candy Crush. Instead, she put her time to good use—she turned five months of commuting into a stunning wedding dress.
An avid crocheter, Krneta decide to crochet her own wedding dress as a way to save money and honor the woman who taught her how to crochet.
“I thought crocheting my wedding dress would be a nice tribute to my paternal grandmother who taught me how to crochet when I was a child,”she told Seattle Magazine. “I wish my grandmother could have seen this dress but she passed away several years before.”
Most brides spend a fortune on their dresses, but Krneta only spent $30 (plus bus fare). And by doing all of her crotcheting on the bus, Krneta freed up time to plan her wedding.
Having gone through the process, Krneta has some advice for brides-to-be: “I think the most important thing to remember if you’re going to have a wedding is that there is no right way or wrong way to do it. Your wedding should be about you, your partner, your family, and friends,” she told Seattle Magazine. “I would certainly pass the dress on to my future children if they wanted it.”
Krtena explained how she did it on reddit. “I crocheted my lace wedding dress on the bus during my work commute for about 5 months. The dress is a pattern I designed with a commonly used pineapple stitch.”
And Krneta proved that beautiful wedding dresses don’t have to cost much money. “The dress was practically free because I didn’t spend much money on it (under $30 for all of the materials including fabric for the lining) and I didn’t spend much extra time on it. My commute time couldn’t be used for anything else anyway.”
While most brides only wear their dresses once, Krneta has plans for hers.
“The dress is also machine washable (I’ve washed it several times), doesn’t wrinkle or need any special care, and I plan on wearing it again with linings of different colors and with the train bustled up in different ways.”
None of her effort would have mattered if it didn’t turn out to be such a stunning dress. I think it’s time I start using my time a little more wisely. Who knows what kind of magic I’ll also be able to create!
