Ouch! That’s probably what you will say when you wake up with a sty in your eye.
Similar to a pimple, a sty is like a little boil with a yellow dot in the middle. And when you have one, your eyelid doesn’t feel or look particularly good.
In most cases, a sty is caused by an infection of oil glands in the eyelid.
Even though it often goes away on its own, a sty can be unbearable and make you wish you could instantly get rid of the pain and discomfort.
Here are some home remedies what you can use to alleviate the problems right now!
1. Tea bags
One proven anti-inflammatory is green tea. Even black tea and herbal teas like mint and camomile are said to be effective. Soak a tea bag in warm or hot water for a few minutes and then hold the tea bag on your eyelid for 15-20 minutes.
2. Warm compress
This is perhaps the most common remedy for styes. Use a compress of hot water and apply it to the irritated area. This is child-friendly and safe to leave on overnight.
3. Baby Shampoo
Baby shampoo is known for being gentle on the eyes. Mix a little with warm water and wash your eye. Either cleanse your eye with the diluted solution directly or use a cotton swab.
4. Turmeric
Turmeric is a natural natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Mix 2 teaspoons with a cup of warm water to make an eye wash.
Leave the mixture on the affected eye for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. Do it twice a day until the infection is gone.
5. Coriander
Many people have coriander at home. But did you know it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties? Boil 1-2 tablespoons of coriander with half a cup of water. Allow it to cool for at least an hour and wash the affected eye with the solution. Repeat if necessary.
6. Milk
Heat some milk and dip a cotton ball into it. Leave it on your eyelid overnight to shrink the sty. You can also add some turmeric to the milk.
7. Apple cider vinegar
Stir a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of warm water. Drink the mixture every day for a few days or make a compress with it.
8. Salt
Salt also works to relieve infections and swelling. Pour a few teaspoons of salt into a little warm water and apply it to the eye with a compress.
9. Gold ring
Believe or not, but some people claim that a gold ring can do wonders when it comes to curing a sty. Rub a ring that’s at least 14kg gold on the affected area for about five minutes a couple of times a day. It’s said to ease the pain and shorten the healing time.
10. Potato
The enzymes in raw potatoes can alleviate inflammation and pain. Shred some potatoes and wrap the shreds in a clean cotton cloth to make a poultice. You can also use a raw potato and put the skin directly over the eye.
To reduce the likelihood of you getting a sty in the future, here are some precautions you can take:
- Avoid sharing makeup or using dirty makeup brushes.
- Remove contact lenses every night before bed.
- Wash your hands before touching your eyes.
- Keep your eyes clean.
Please share this information with everyone you know. They’ll appreciate it the next time they get a sty.
