Police in High Point, North Carolina announced yesterday the discovery of a body that they believe to be missing 81-year-old Heddie Dawkins.
Dawkins, who suffered from dementia, disappeared from her home last Wednesday, sparking a police search. Fears that she had injured herself were raised when she was spotted on a doorbell video with blood on her face and heads.
During the search, police and volunteer groups left bags filled with food and supplies in the hope that the 81-year-old might come across them.
Now, though, officials have confirmed that a body found on Tuesday is believed to be that of Dawkins. As per reports, a search party found the body in a wooded area near a house around half a mile from where Dawkins lived.
Cory Dawkins, Heddie’s grandson, said: “It’s amazing closure because we know where she’s at.
“She’s not in pain, she’s with our granddaddy and she’s happy.”
Another of Heddie’s grandchildren, Kevin Dawkins, added: “Everyone in the city came together for our family. Just the simple thing that they came together for one person in our family, they can come together for anything else in the city to make it a better place.”
“It shouldn’t take things like this for my family to get together and for a lot of other families,” Cory said.
“Talk to your loved ones. Call them go to their house and see them.”
The release from Hight Point police yesterday read:
“On August 30, 2022, officers responded to a call in the 2300 block of Hickswood Court. Officers located a body in the woods. Investigators believe it is the body Heddie Dawkins (B/F, 81), who was reported missing on August 24, 2022. Foul play is not suspected.”
As per Fox 8, Dawkins, who had lived at a property with one of her daughters, initially left her home last Wednesday. She was then seen on the doorbell camera of the house attempting to get back in.
She was later spotted on another doorbell camera with blood on her face and head, leading officers to suspect that she had sustained an injury.
We’re happy for Heddie’s family that she has been found and can now be laid to rest at peace.
Please, share this article to thank the officers and volunteers who assisted in the search to find Heddie.
Rest in peace, Heddie.
