Losing a parent to a long illness can be incredibly hard. Similarly for Penelope, it was tough to see her dad as he neared his end, but she decided to let him go on his own terms…
Penelope’s dad had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for quite a while. Both her father and the rest of his family knew that he was steadily nearing his end.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an illness that is chronic and obstructs the airflow to a person’s lungs. This makes it difficult to breathe among other things.
Penelope and her mother were both aware of the fact that her father had now come to the end of his life on earth and were ready for it. But before he passed on, the two women were set on making his last moments memorable for him.
As he was admitted to the hospital, Penelope took his favorite drink for him; a Bundaberg rum and cola. In the video she posted, she wrote, “I came prepared for the send-off.”
She also came equipped with a syringe because her father had trouble drinking on his own from a can. She used the syringe to slowly give her father a sip of his favorite drink. As she did, he nodded excitedly.
She recorded the entire interaction but only posted 27 seconds of it on her TikTok account. In the caption, she wrote a tear-jerking message, “One last drink with dad before his spirit returned to the universe. Until we cross paths again old man. I love you.”
Penelope’s father was in palliative care to help him pass on peacefully. Palliative care is specifically designed to help terminal patients with chronic illnesses or those at an age where their passing seems inevitable to get the care they need in their final days.
Medical professionals are available around the clock to take care of any patient’s needs. Nurses and other staff members also curate an atmosphere of support and peace to help make the patients feel more at ease.
