Arnold Schwarzenegger has been known as many things over the course of his life, but perhaps the moniker he holds closest to his heart is that of family man.
The former seven-time Mr. Olympia, turned Hollywood hero, turned California governor, now has adult children of his own, including his eldest daughter, Katherine Schwarzenegger, married to Chris Pratt.
It’s through Katherine that Arnold was able to welcome his first grandchild to the world, taking on the mantle of grandfather as his latest challenge.
And a challenge it surely is – as anyone who’s lucky enough to be a grandparent can likely attest to. That said, Arnie has supposedly gone on record as saying it’s “easy” work, while simultaneously claiming that his daughter “freaked out” when she saw him holding her first baby.

It can’t have been easy for Hollywood actor Chris Pratt to find the love of his life, only to then realize that her father was the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Back in 2019, Pratt told Us Magazine that he first met Katherine Schwarzenegger in a church. He remains of the opinion that fate brought them together.
“We met at church. It was a lot of kismet and a lot of connections, but that was where we met,” he said.
The couple began their dating journey in 2018, and Katherine formed a bond with Pratt’s son.
An insider reportedly told PEOPLE in 2019: “Katherine is like a big kid and loves doing activities with Jack. She loves that Chris is a dad. Seeing Chris with Jack made Katherine positive from early on that Chris is ‘the one.’”
Following a short engagement that same year (2019), Chris and Katherine tied the knot at a secret ceremony on June 8.
Moreover, the couple were rumored to be interested in expanding their family to three shortly after getting married. This was something Pratt’s father-in-law, the Terminator himself, shared his own opinion about with Extra.
Arnie said: “I don’t push it because I know it’s going to happen eventually. It’s up to Chris and her when they want to do that. I’m looking forward to it.”
Fortunately, Schwarzenegger didn’t have to wait all that long.
Chris and Katherine welcomed daughter Lyla in August, 2020, and Arnie posted a heartwarming message to Instagram to mark the occasion.
Speaking on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in April, 2021, Arnie said that having a granddaughter “makes me feel old”, while also shedding some light on the fact that his daughter appears to be an anxious mom.
He added: “Whenever you touch the baby, she says, ‘Oh my god, don’t hold it like this.’ I said, ‘Katherine, come on. I held enough children in my hands. I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m an expert in that stuff.’ And then she freaks out.”
He later said that “It is the easiest thing to be a grandfather”. By all accounts, the former Governor of California takes every opportunity to see his family, which grew in size earlier this year when Katherine and Chris welcomed their second child, another daughter named Eloise.
The couple posted to their Instagram at the time:
“We are so excited to announce the birth of our second daughter, Eloise Christina Schwarzenegger Pratt. We feel beyond blessed and grateful. Love, Katherine and Chris.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m so happy for Arnold Schwarzenegger and appreciate all that he is done, both in the realm of entertainment and beyond.
