On May 19, 1992, Mary Jo Buttafuoco was shot in the face by the then 17-year-old Amy Fisher, who was having an affair with Mary Jo’s husband, Joey Buttafuoco.
The event created headlines around the world — perhaps because the assassination attempt could be likened to something you might see in a Hollywood movie.
Amy Fisher met businessman Joey Buttafuoco for the first time when her parents brought their car in for repair at his Long Island, USA workshop.
The couple then started a romance, but a year later Joey ended the relationship.
Some time later, someone rang at Mary Jo Buttafuoco’s door. When she opened it, she found Amy Fisher outside. Amy shot her in the face and fled the scene.
Miraculously, Mary survived the horrendous event.
She became deaf in one ear and her face was partially paralyzed and destroyed.
Fortunately, her description of Amy Fisher helped police identify and arrest her. Despite the traumatic event and her husband’s devastating infidelity, Mary Jo remained loyal to Joey for several years, though they ultimately divorced in 2003.
With a bullet still in her brain and with the right side of the face paralyzed, Mary Jo had lost her ability to smile.
Her self-esteem collapsed and for many years she was terrified to look at herself in the mirror.
Not only did her face constantly remind her of her assassination attempt, it also made her feel unattractive.
But now, 62-year-old Mary Jo has undergone a fantastic transformation, both inside and out.
Highly skilled surgeon Babak Azizzadeh performed revolutionary surgery on this brave and strong woman to restore the nerves in her face and give her her smile back.
